BEIMUN XXXII 2025
BEIMUN XXXII: Chairing the International Court of Justice
Attending BEIMUN XXXII was an unforgettable experience, but having the honor to serve as the Chair for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) made it even more special. This year, the ICJ was introduced for the first time at BEIMUN, and I had the immense responsibility of leading the committee as the expert chair on Whaling in the Antarctic (Australia v. Japan: New Zealand intervening) 2010-2014. Guiding this newly implemented committee came with challenges, but it also gave me the opportunity to shape its structure and procedures in a way that set the foundation for future conferences.
Breaking New Ground
Unlike the conventional General Assembly or Specialized Agencies, the ICJ operates with an entirely different framework. Rather than debating and passing resolutions, justices deliberate over cases brought before the court, analyzing evidence and applying legal principles to reach a verdict. Given that this was the first time BEIMUN had introduced the ICJ, I had to familiarize myself with a completely new set of committee dynamics, ensuring that we upheld procedural integrity while allowing room for meaningful discourse and legal analysis.
From the outset, I worked closely with my fellow chairs and the BEIMUN leadership to establish a structure that balanced order and flexibility. Ensuring that justices had the opportunity to present well-founded legal arguments while maintaining the formality of the court was a delicate task. I spent hours refining the format, preparing guiding documents, and setting the tone for the committee to function smoothly.
Leading the Debate: Whaling in the Antarctic
The case itself—Whaling in the Antarctic—was a landmark legal dispute that questioned the legitimacy of Japan’s whaling activities under the guise of scientific research. This case held immense significance in international law, particularly in environmental conservation and sovereign rights. Serving as the expert chair for this case meant I had to deeply understand its legal and ethical nuances. My role was not just to facilitate discussions but also to ensure that the justices applied rigorous legal reasoning while considering the political and environmental implications of the case.
Throughout the conference, I witnessed compelling arguments from both sides. Justices meticulously examined legal documents, past precedents, and international treaties, such as the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling. The challenge was to guide them towards a fair and well-reasoned verdict while allowing room for critical debate.
Reflections and Takeaways
Chairing the ICJ at BEIMUN XXXII was a transformative experience. It pushed me to refine my leadership, adaptability, and legal analytical skills. Stepping into a role where I had to navigate uncharted procedural territory taught me the importance of preparation and composure under pressure. More importantly, I saw how international law, even in a simulated setting, can spark thought-provoking discussions that mirror real-world diplomatic complexities.
Beyond the committee itself, BEIMUN XXXII reaffirmed my appreciation for the Model United Nations community. The conference brought together delegates from diverse backgrounds, all passionate about diplomacy and global issues. Seeing delegates engage in meaningful dialogue, question assumptions, and propose solutions to pressing global challenges reminded me why I continue to dedicate myself to MUN.
Looking ahead, I hope the ICJ remains a permanent part of BEIMUN and continues to evolve. It was an incredible privilege to be part of this inaugural committee, and I can’t wait to see how future chairs and justices build upon the foundation we established this year.
For anyone considering stepping into a leadership role at MUN—especially in untested waters—my advice is this: take the leap. The responsibility may feel daunting, but the rewards of growth, learning, and impact far outweigh the challenges. BEIMUN XXXII will always be a defining moment in my MUN journey, and I am grateful to have played a role in shaping a new chapter in its history.
